READING ON THE CAIRNGORMS
Two books you need to read
If you are at all interested in the history of the Cairngorms then these are two books to read.
Living Mountain by Nan Shepherd is a classic from the 1970's, but speaking from life in the Cairngorms before the war. It's a mix of poetry, natural history and anthropology. Patrick Baker's Cairngorms: A Secret History is more modern take on the history of the Cairngorms from the age of Gortex.
They are both full of useful facts and well written. But what appeals more to me is the sense of adventure and wilderness that underlies both books. Nan Shepherd sleeps in barns for months, and hangs her head over precipices. Patrick Baker goes to all the lonely places I have seen on the map, then stays overnight looking for aircraft crash remains and wild cats.
