A Mounth Path
The Jock’s Road, or Tolmounth, is an old path. It carried sheep, cattle, maybe soldiers and smuggled whisky, from the mountains to markets in the lowlands to the east. It played its part in the history of mountain adventure in Aberdeenshire too. A dispute between users and landowners in 1842 prompted government bills on rights of way. Not that it helped the parties then - legal fees left both sides bankrupt.
