Balfour Forest, Fungle Road and Carnferg Gorse Traverse
Updated: Feb 10
This ride gets some great views and really flowing trails only 2 hours from the road. A short trip with plenty of variety and potential to add on trail.
The first half of the route is a steady climb on the estate road from the small Balfour Community Forest Carpark, past the estate cottage with outbuildings and kennels, past good-sized waterfalls, and open pine woodland. Its a punchy climb in parts with some open switchbacks, just before it flattens out at the junction with the Fungle Path Single Track.
The small col here is the highest point on the ride. It gives some fantastic views to the shoulder of Lochnagar in the West, Mountain Keen and Mount Battock in the south east. All these had a touch of snow the day we did it, despite bright blue skies. The route turns for home at the southern end of Carnferg, and takes a gently falling line across the eastern slope of the hill - the Gorse Traverse. There are fantastic views again overlooking Glencat and into Deeside beyond.
Its all single track from here off the slopes of Carnferg, back into Balfour Forest, until you pop out right beside the car.
